It's Friday night. What's there to do? We've compiled a list of some of our favorite things to do here in the city to answer that question.

To get your dose of culture here in the concrete jungle, go check out the beautiful Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Arts Museum, or (our favorite) the Menil Collection. If you have a chance, also visit the Byzantine Chapel near the Menil - it's truly incredible.

If you want to see a movie that you might not be able to find at every other cineplex around the country, check out the Angelika, the River Oaks, or the Greenway theatres.

Catch some sunshine at the Cullen Sculpture Garden, roll down the hill at Miller Outdoor Theatre, or feed the ducks at Hermann Park.

When it comes to food, Houston is world-class but still (relatively) inexpensive. There are, of course, the usual chain restaurants, but there are also many, many local gems. For cheap and fast Vietnamese, head to Mai's or Van Loc in Midtown. For amazing sushi and Japanese ice cream, go for Osaka. If you've never tried a bubble tea (an Asian beverage with tapioca pearls), run over to Teahouse (free wifi too!). Our favorite Indian restaurant is Bombay Sweets - $6.50 for an amazing buffet with fresh naan, and don't forget dessert!

Amazing coffee, cake, fabulous pizzas, sandwiches, and even breakfast can be found at Empire Cafe. Houston's best barbecue can be procured at Goode Company, but don't forget to head across the street to it's sister restaurant, Goode Company Taqueria (one of the best breakfast places around). Mexican food is everywhere, but some places are better than others. For super cheap breakfast tacos, go to Tacos A-Go-Go in Midtown. Taqueria La Tapatia is another great taco joint, but don't forget about the 24-hour Chapultepec, just down the street. Actually, there about a billion good Mexican places in Houston.

Excellent breakfast (all day) can be found at Katz's Deli; amazing French breakfast resides at Croissant Brioche; check out Kraftsmen Baking for fabulous croissant breakfast sandwiches and great coffee. Speaking of coffee, Diedrich's is a great local alternative, but if you want to see something historic, go to the corner of West Gray and Kirby, where two Starbucks oppose each other! On the Italian side, Paulie's is pretty great for big pasta dishes and panini, but check out Collina's too. Star Pizza's deep-dish simply cannot be beat. If you need good ol' classic American fare, hit the 59 Diner.

We could go on and on. Do yourself a favor and check out the restaurant section at houstonpress.com.

Can't wait to see you!

Accomodations

Well, I guess if we want folks to show up at our wedding, we should let them know where they can stay! Jeff and I have been busy on the wedding front. We chose Niko Niko's to cater the wedding, so there will be lots of wonderful Greek food to enjoy. We both really love the food and were impressed by their knowledgeable and friendly catering coordinator, Kostas. He listened to us, made suggestions, respected our budget, drew up the proposal professionally, and was generally gracious. I feel confident that he will put together a lovely spread for our reception.
We have a meeting at Acadian Bakery tomorrow to discuss cakes. I love their chocolate raspberry cake. So, even though they might be a little expensive we thought we would meet with them to find out our options. You never know unless you ask. After this meeting we will decide on a bakery and cross that detail off of the list.

We also have scheduled a meeting tomorrow with the calligrapher for our wedding certificate. The wedding certificate has a long history in Quaker ceremonies. In a Quaker wedding, the couple say their vows to one another without a presiding officiant. Quakers believe that it is only the presence of God in the meeting that gives the union its significance. The wedding certificate serves to document the wedding ceremony and is signed by the bride and groom as well as everyone in attendance. The certificates are generally handmade for the couple and are displayed in the home as a reminder of their vows and the support of the community. They often become important family heirlooms and can prove to be valuable historic documents. I love what the wedding document represents, and I am very excited about having this spiritual work of art created for us. The artist we are meeting has done several Quaker certificates as well as Jewish wedding documents (ketubah).

After our meetings we will be away from Houston for a few days. We are traveling to NYC to visit my sister and see her senior dance work at Eugene Lang College (New School University). Since neither of us has ever spent more than a few hours in the city this will be a very fun trip.

Making Progress

Well, it was a crazy weekend of cutting, pasting, and folding, but we got most of the work on our invitations done. Since it's tough to find invitation designs that are tasteful without spending a small fortune, we thought we'd put our modest design talent to work and make our own. It's been a lot of work, but I think the end results are going to be great (provided Clara doesn't chew them up before we can mail them). Now we just have to do the final stuffing and addressing. We also need to find the least-ugly of stamps that the postal service has to offer, with the upcoming rate hike complicating things slightly. First, what most traditional bakeries consider wedding cake tastes like sponge and high-fructose corn syrup. The customer service was nice enough at the first place we went, and the decoration available seemed imaginative, but the cake samples seemed like they were straight out of 1955. Super sweet, dry as a bone, sicky-sweet filling, and very little flavor. I guess that must be what most people want out of a wedding cake, since that's what's available at most places.

But not us! On a whim, we checked out Arandas Bakery, and we were totally impressed. Not only did they have all the great Mexican pastries that we loved when we were in Mexico, but they do wedding cakes, too! The front window had a gigantic cake (designed for a quinceanera) consisting of no less than six individual cakes. Obviously, not quite our style. But here's the deal: they'll do a tres leches wedding cake! If you've never tried it, walk right over to your local panaderia and grab some! It's basically a cake soaked in three kinds of milk (hence the name), giving it a distinctively moist texture and rich taste. It comes in several flavors, including coffee, strawberry, and chocolate, along with the plain version. Yummmm....

We've got a few more places to check out before we make a final decision, but we've got at least one (very) good choice...

Crunch Time

After a nice, long lull in wedding planning, the time has come to actually get stuff done! We're only 4 months out (aah!), and this week we're trying to get our caterer nailed down. Most of the wedding-how-to books say you're supposed to book much earlier than that, but...we like to live dangerously. So this week we're meeting with two local restaurants (Hungry's and Niko Niko's!) to get catering proposals, and then we're heading over to Three Brothers Bakery on Saturday to scout out The Cake. Plus we've got two or three more potential caterers and bakers in mind. It's all somewhat intimidating - can't we just order a bunch of pizza and get a keg?

In other news, Zoe's found the seamstress who'll be making her dress, and we're working on finding a calligrapher for our wedding certificate (a tradition in Quaker weddings). The paper that we'll use to make the invitations (yeah, DIY, baby!) should arrive any day now, too. Plus we've been scouting out registry stuff. I swear, Crate & Barrel must make 90% of their annual profits off of couples who go in there and go postal with the scanner gun. When we went last Saturday, it was couples & scanners as far as the eye could see...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_wsd50Sdt9no/RcKluzx0i5I/AAAAAAAAAAk/nXA2ecC7MnI/s320/124031222_276303.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026762357690633106" />A Confession

Well, I have to confess...there's another woman in my life. She's petite, athletic, fun-loving, affectionate, and very fuzzy. Her name is Clara - and she's our new cat! Woo-hoo! Zoe and I have wanted a cat for quite a while, but circumstances have prevented it till now. After a few weeks of preparation, we went to the Houston SPCA and found her. Zoe, in particular, has been looking at kittens, but I think Clara is a nice compromise between little fuzzball and stable, mature feline. She wasn't shy at all when we met her in the 'get-to-know-you' room - she just started purring and climbing all over us. I was hooked.

Being the responsible people that we are, we're picking her up in a few days so she can be fixed (a side note - a strange euphemism for spaying that I've seen thrown around is altered - as in, abducted by aliens and altered - I mean, who comes up with this stuff?). But we've got our new pet carriers, litter box, food bowls, and assorted goodies all ready to go. When I was a kid growing up with cats, my parents could never get me to feed the cat or scoop the litter or trim the nails, and here I am, chomping at the bit. I can't wait!

(Oh, and we'll put up a better picture as soon as we can - this one's from the SPCA website.)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_wsd50Sdt9no/Rb5W3enHXqI/AAAAAAAAAAU/33Cd1-Howjg/s200/interiormeetinghouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5025549745301970594" />Clear!

Well, it's official! Zoe and I have been given approval or blessing from our clearness committee to go ahead and get married. A clearness committee is made up of members of a Quaker meeting who are charged with discerning how to respond to a particular choice or dilemma. In the case of a marriage, the committee helps to discern a) whether a couples' decision to get married is the right choice, and b) whether it is prudent for the meeting to take the couples' relationship and marriage under its care. Members of the committee perform some of the functions of pre-marital counseling in that they ask 'the hard questions' to see whether the couple has thought about important issues (i.e., finances, children, communication).

We only had one meeting with our clearness committee (the process can take months in some cases), but we're happy to report that we'll be married under the care (and with the blessing of) our Friends meeting. Zoe and I didn't have much doubt, but it certainly didn't hurt to go through the discernment process. Now it's back to more planning - we've gotten our reception site reserved, so the next thing to work on is food...woo-hoo!

School Days
I am wrapping up all of the loose ends here at the end of the semester at UH and marveling at the passage of time. Things seem to move at lightning pace these days. I have a group project due tomorrow, a final on Thursday, and a paper and a final on Monday. But after that I can take a deep breath and relax for the holidays. I'm looking forward to some quality reading time and a chance to map out a timeline for all of the wedding bits. I'm much better about planning when I have the big picture in front of me.
Despite the busy schedule post-Thanksgiving, we are making a little progress on the wedding plans. Jeff and I have designed the basics for the invitations and save-the-date cards. Both of us enjoy the basics of design, so we decided to do them ourselves. The big project for the holidays will be assembling the possible guest list and compiling addresses.
I went with Mom a few weeks ago to look at the Italian Cultural and Community center as a possibility for the reception. It is a nice old house in Montrose near the Museum District and between my parents' house and Jeff's parents' house. As soon as school is out, Mom and I will sit down and just go over the budget, but I think that it is a really good choice. The location is great and the people there seem very nice and easy to work with.
To all of our friends and family traveling to Texas over the holidays: please give us a call or send an email. We want to see you!
Just a note about the previous posts. Blogger changed the way that we sign in to post to this blog. Now it shows up as Zoe or Jeff as the author of a post, but any entries prior to the new format show up as Jeff since he originally set up the blog.

Date Set!

The second question everyone asks when you tell them you're getting married is, of course, "When's the wedding?" (the first is, "Where's the ring?"). Well, we've finally got a date set: Saturday, July 14, 2007! I know, could we have chosen a hotter time of year? Not to worry, air-conditioning will be in abundance. It took a few weeks to talk to the right people at our Quaker meeting, but we're on the calendar now (finally!). We're still working on getting the reception site nailed down, but I don't think we'll have any trouble. So watch your mailboxes for Save the Date cards!

Oh, and happy early Bastille Day to the francophiles out there! The ring!

Okay, after many requests (demands?) for more pictures and for shots of The Ring, here it is...

It's an English ring that was made sometime in the 1880s. It's got three sapphires and four really tiny diamonds. As I think we've said before, we didn't really think we'd walk out of the shop with a ring made of yellow gold, but this one was just right. Unfortunately, it's back at the jeweler's for a couple days to be appraised. Knowing our luck with things, insurance is a must...

Friday Night Writes

So it's Friday night, and yours truly is being a slug on the couch. Zoe and I had a great dinner with my mom at Teala's this evening, and now we're basking in the glow of post-fajita bliss. I know, we should be out on the town partying the proverbial hardy, but...boy, this couch feels good. Zoe went to Texas Art Supply (fun!) and found some neat calligraphy stuff, and she's practicing Roman letters with a dip pen. It's beautiful but painstaking work, and the thought of doing all our invitations this way is a bit daunting...

We checked out the lovely Italian Cultural Center on Thursday as a possible reception site. Essentially a historic home with a small banquet hall built onto it, we found the setting and the staff to be wonderful. We'll be going back with a few more sets of eyes to just make sure the space will be comfortable for all our guests. I'm rooting for this place, but there are probably others we should check out. We've definitely ruled out the Czech Cultural Center as too ritzy - HGO holds their annual holiday parties there! That's life on a budget. But the Italian Center is lovely, and I think it would work great. Stay tuned...

I'm so happy that the ring came back from the jeweler. It really is beautiful. It is delicate and fits my hand very well. I love the fact that it is so old and it makes me wonder about the women that wore it before me. I wanted an antique ring because I knew it would be unique and have a history. As Jeff mentioned in his post, I thought that I would choose a white gold or silver ring, but this one just felt right when I put it on. The sapphires are the color of bluebonnets and blue delphinium.
We announced our engagement at Live Oak Friends meeting this past Sunday and we have begun the process of talking to the meeting about planning this wedding. Everyone was very congratulatory and seemed very willing to help us. So, we can move forward and check the calendar for the availability of the meeting house in order to choose a date. I think that we will both breathe a sigh of relief once we have "the date" set. Even though we have plenty of time, it is hard to resist the urge to plan, plan, plan!

The Ring Thing

We opted to go ring shopping together after I proposed to Zoe, and given my complete lack of experience in buying jewelry, I'm glad I did. We went to a place on Westheimer called Past Era and had a lovely experience - no pushy salespeople and a beautiful selection of rings. I think we both expected to choose a silver engagement ring, but Zoe actually ended up with a beautiful gold one from the 1880s. It was apparently made in England, and has three small sapphires (and two diamonds) on the half-hoop design. Beautiful!

Unfortunately, we haven't seen it since the day we bought it, since it had to be resized (itty-bitty fingers!) and some of the gold setting repaired. But I got a call from the shop today, and it's ready to pick up! Work?
I am officially procrastinating at the moment and posting to this blog rather than reading for my classes. Jeff and I have started the process of breaking down a budget for this wedding. I think that we will be able to keep costs down, but it is going to take a lot of involvement on our part and the help of family and friends. The whole wedding industry (and industry it is) is geared toward lavish affairs. Most of the "advice" websites and books offer articles like: "Find your bride style!" and "Latest trends in table settings!". Frankly, I am more interested in knowing if there are liability issues if we choose to provide the alcohol ourselves, and finding a location for a reception that won't eat the catering budget. I'll be calling a few friends in the next week to see if they have tips. But, all in good time. Right now I am going to just enjoy the glow, wait for my ring to return from the jeweler, and go put my nose in a book for a few hours.

en·gage (in-'gAj)

to bind (as oneself) to do something; especially : to bind by a pledge to marry

We know, we know - you're all yelling, "FINALLY!"
